           Thesemenbeganstragglingin,singlyandingroups,thelessseriouslywoundedsupportingthosewholimpedandstaggered.Soonasteadystreamofthemwasestablished,makingtheirpainfulwayintotowntowardthehospitals,theirfacesblackasnegroes’frompowderstains,dustandsweat,theirwoundsunbandaged,blooddrying,fliesswarmingaboutthem.

           AuntPitty’swasoneofthefirsthouseswhichthewoundedreachedastheystruggledinfromthenorthofthetown,andoneafteranother,theytotteredtothegate,sankdownonthegreenlawnandcroaked:
