           MeadewasupstairswithPhil,waitingherhusband’sreturn,andMelaniesatintheparlor,talkinginalowvoicetoagroupofsympatheticneighbors.Shewasbusywithneedleandscissors,alteringamourningdressthatMrs.ElsinghadlenttoMrs.Meade.Alreadythehousewasfulloftheacridsmellofclothesboilinginhomemadeblackdyefor,inthekitchen,thesobbingcookwasstirringallofMrs.Meade’sdressesinthehugewashpot.

           "Howisshe?"questionedScarlettsoftly.
