           Crowdsformedatthedepot,hopingfornewsfromincomingtrains,atthetelegraphoffice,infrontoftheharriedheadquarters,beforethelockeddoorsofthenewspapers.Theywereoddlystillcrowds,crowdsthatquietlygrewlargerandlarger.Therewasnotalking.Occasionallyanoldman’streblevoicebeggedfornews,andinsteadofincitingthecrowdtobabblingitonlyintensifiedthehushastheyheardtheoft-repeated:"NothingonthewiresyetfromtheNorthexceptthatthere’sbeenfighting."Thefringeofwomenonfootandincarriagesgrewgreaterandgreater,andtheheatoftheclose-packedbodiesanddustrisingfromrestlessfeetweresuffocating.Thewomendidnotspeak,buttheirpalesetfacespleadedwithamuteeloquencethatwaslouderthanwailing.

           Therewashardlyahouseintownthathadnotsentawayason,abrother,afather,alover,ahusband,tothisbattle.Theyallwaitedtohearthenewsthatdeathhadcometotheirhomes.Theyexpecteddeath.Theydidnotexpectdefeat.Thatthoughttheydismissed.Theirmenmightbedying,evennow,onthesun-parchedgrassofthePennsylvaniahills.EvennowtheSouthernranksmightbefallinglikegrainbeforeahailstorm,buttheCauseforwhichtheyfoughtcouldneverfall.Theymightbedyinginthousandsbut,likethefruitofthedragon’steeth,thousandsoffreshmeningrayandbutternutwiththeRebelyellontheirlipswouldspringupfromtheearthtotaketheirplaces.Wherethesemenwouldcomefrom,nooneknew.
