           Therumorwhichhadbeencreepingaboutundergroundwasnowbeingopenlydiscussed,thatRhettButlernotonlyranhisownfourboatsandsoldthecargoesatunheard-ofpricesbutboughtupthecargoesofotherboatsandheldthemforrisesinprices.Itwassaidthathewasattheheadofacombineworthmorethanamilliondollars,withWilmingtonasitsheadquartersforthepurposeofbuyingblockadegoodsonthedocks.TheyhaddozensofwarehousesinthatcityandinRichmond,sothestoryran,andthewarehouseswerecrammedwithfoodandclothingthatwerebeingheldforhigherprices.Alreadysoldiersandciviliansalikewerefeelingthepinch,andthemutteringagainsthimandhisfellowspeculatorswasbitter.
