           Shehadlookedmostfetching,wearingamodestlydrapedGreekrobeofwhitecheeseclothgirdledwithredandblueandholdingtheStarsandBarsinonehand,whilewiththeothershestretchedouttothekneelingCaptainCareyAshburn,ofAlabama,thegold-hiltedsaberwhichhadbelongedtoCharlesandhisfather.

           Whenhertableauwasover,shecouldnothelpseekingRhett’seyestoseeifhehadappreciatedtheprettypictureshemade.Withafeelingofexasperationshesawthathewasinanargumentandprobablyhadnotevennoticedher.Scarlettcouldseebythefacesofthegroupsurroundinghimthattheywereinfuriatedbywhathewassaying.

           "Sir,"saidWillie,hisvoiceshaking,"ifwewerenotunderthisroof"

           Williewentscarletandallconversationceased.Everyonewasembarrassed.Williewasstrongandhealthyandofmilitaryageandyethewasn’tatthefront.Ofcourse,hewastheonlyboyhismotherhadand,afterall,somebodyhadtobeinthemilitiatoprotectthestate.
