           Ontheoutskirtsoftownweretheremountdepotswherehorsesandmulesmilledaboutinlargecorrals,andalongsidestreetswerethehospitals.AsUnclePetertoldheraboutthem,ScarlettfeltthatAtlantamustbeacityofthewounded,forthereweregeneralhospitals,contagioushospitals,convalescenthospitalswithoutnumber.AndeverydaythetrainsjustbelowFivePointsdisgorgedmoresickandmorewounded.

           Thelittletownwasgoneandthefaceoftherapidlygrowingcitywasanimatedwithnever-ceasingenergyandbustle.ThesightofsomuchhurryingmadeScarlett,freshfromruralleisureandquiet,almostbreathless,butshelikedit.Therewasanexcitingatmosphereabouttheplacethatupliftedher.Itwasasifshecouldactuallyfeeltheacceleratedsteadypulseofthetown’sheartbeatingintimewithherown.

           Astheyslowlymadetheirwaythroughthemudholesofthetown’schiefstreet,shenotedwithinterestallthenewbuildingsandthenewfaces.Thesidewalkswerecrowdedwithmeninuniform,bearingtheinsigniaofallranksandallservicebranches;thenarrowstreetwasjammedwithvehiclescarriages,buggies,ambulances,coveredarmywagonswithprofanedriversswearingasthemulesstruggledthroughtheruts;gray-cladcouriersdashedspatteringthroughthestreetsfromoneheadquarterstoanother,bearingordersandtelegraphicdispatches;convalescentslimpedaboutoncrutches,usuallywithasolicitousladyateitherelbow;bugleanddrumandbarkedorderssoundedfromthedrillfieldswheretherecruitswerebeingturnedintosoldiers;andwithherheartinherthroat,ScarletthadherfirstsightofYankeeuniforms,asUnclePeterpointedwithhiswhiptoadetachmentofdejected-lookingbluecoatsbeingshepherdedtowardthedepotbyasquadofConfederateswithfixedbayonets,toentrainfortheprisoncamp.
