           Why,oh,whycouldn’tGodhavetakenEllaifHehadtotakeoneofherchildren?Ellawasnocomforttoher,nowthatBonniewasgone.ButRhettdidnotseemtowantanyotherchildren.Atleasthenevercametoherbedroomthoughnowthedoorwasneverlockedandusuallyinvitinglyajar.Hedidnotseemtocare.Hedidnotseemtocareforanythingnowexceptwhiskyandthatblowzyred-hairedwoman.

           Hewasbitternow,wherehehadbeenpleasantlyjeering,brutalwherehisthrustshadoncebeentemperedwithhumor.AfterBonniedied,manyofthegoodladiesoftheneighborhoodwhohadbeenwonovertohimbyhischarmingmannerswithhisdaughterwereanxioustoshowhimkindness.Theystoppedhimonthestreettogivehimtheirsympathyandspoketohimfromovertheirhedges,sayingthattheyunderstood.ButnowthatBonnie,thereasonforhisgoodmanners,wasgonethemannerswentto.Hecuttheladiesandtheirwell-meantcondolencesoffshortly,rudely.

           But,oddlyenough,theladieswerenotoffended.Theyunderstood,orthoughttheyunderstood.Whenherodehomeinthetwilightalmosttoodrunktostayinthesaddle,scowlingatthosewhospoketohim,theladiessaid"Poorthing!"andredoubledtheireffortstobekindandgentle.Theyfeltverysorryforhim,brokenheartedandridinghometonobettercomfortthanScarlett.

           Everybodyknewhowcoldandheartlessshewas.EverybodywasappalledattheseemingeasewithwhichshehadrecoveredfromBonnie’sdeath,neverrealizingorcaringtorealizetheeffortthatlaybehindthatseemingrecovery.
