           Averandaencircledtheentirehouse,andfourflightsofstepsonthefoursidesofthebuildingleduptoit.Theyardwaswideandgreenandscatteredaboutitwererusticironbenches,anironsummerhouse,fashionablycalleda"gazebo"which,Scarletthadbeenassured,wasofpureGothicdesign,andtwolargeironstatues,oneastagandtheotheramastiffaslargeasaShetlandpony.ToWadeandElla,alittledazzledbythesize,splendorandfashionabledarkgloomoftheirnewhome,thesetwometalanimalsweretheonlycheerfulnotes.

           Within,thehousewasfurnishedasScarletthaddesired,withthickredcarpetingwhichranfromwalltowall,redvelvetportieresandthenewestofhighlyvarnishedblack-walnutfurniture,carvedwherevertherewasaninchforcarvingandupholsteredinsuchslickhorsehairthatladieshadtodepositthemselvesthereonwithgreatcareforfearofslidingoff.
