           Iwassoldtoacorndealerandbaker,whomJerryknew,andwithhimhethoughtIshouldhavegoodfoodandfairwork.Inthefirsthewasquiteright,andifmymasterhadalwaysbeenonthepremisesIdonotthinkIshouldhavebeenoverloaded,buttherewasaforemanwhowasalwayshurryinganddrivingeveryone,andfrequentlywhenIhadquiteafullloadhewouldordersomethingelsetobetakenon.Mycarter,whosenamewasJakes,oftensaiditwasmorethanIoughttotake,buttheotheralwaysoverruledhim.“’Twasnousegoingtwicewhenoncewoulddo,andhechosetogetbusinessforward.”

           Jakes,liketheothercarters,alwayshadthecheck-reinup,whichpreventedmefromdrawingeasily,andbythetimeIhadbeentherethreeorfourmonthsIfoundtheworktellingverymuchonmystrength.

           OnedayIwasloadedmorethanusual,andpartoftheroadwasasteepuphill.Iusedallmystrength,butIcouldnotgeton,andwasobligedcontinuallytostop.Thisdidnotpleasemydriver,andhelaidhiswhiponbadly.“Geton,youlazyfellow,”hesaid,“orI’llmakeyou.”

           AgainIstartedtheheavyload,andstruggledonafewyards;againthewhipcamedown,andagainIstruggledforward.Thepainofthatgreatcartwhipwassharp,butmymindwashurtquiteasmuchasmypoorsides.TobepunishedandabusedwhenIwasdoingmyverybestwassohardittooktheheartoutofme.
