Longstringsofyounghorsesoutofthecountry,freshfromthemarshes;anddrovesofshaggylittleWelshponies,nohigherthanMerrylegs;andhundredsofcarthorsesofallsorts,someofthemwiththeirlongtailsbraidedupandtiedwithscarletcord;andagoodmanylikemyself,handsomeandhigh-bred,butfallenintothemiddleclass,throughsomeaccidentorblemish,unsoundnessofwind,orsomeothercomplaint.Thereweresomesplendidanimalsquiteintheirprime,andfitforanything;theywerethrowingouttheirlegsandshowingofftheirpacesinhighstyle,astheyweretrottedoutwithaleadingrein,thegroomrunningbytheside.Butroundinthebackgroundtherewereanumberofpoorthings,sadlybrokendownwithhardwork,withtheirkneesknucklingoverandtheirhindlegsswingingoutateverystep,andthereweresomeverydejected-lookingoldhorses,withtheunderliphangingdownandtheearslyingbackheavily,asiftherewerenomorepleasureinlife,andnomorehope;thereweresomesothinyoumightseealltheirribs,andsomewitholdsoresontheirbacksandhips.Theseweresadsightsforahorsetolookupon,whoknowsnotbuthemaycometothesamestate.
Therewasagreatdealofbargaining,ofrunningupandbeatingdown;andifahorsemayspeakhismindsofarasheunderstands,Ishouldsaythereweremoreliestoldandmoretrickeryatthathorsefairthanaclevermancouldgiveanaccountof.
