Ishouldsaythatforacab-horseIwasverywelloffindeed;mydriverwasmyowner,anditwashisinteresttotreatmewellandnotoverworkme,evenhadhenotbeensogoodamanashewas;buttherewereagreatmanyhorseswhichbelongedtothelargecab-owners,wholetthemouttotheirdriversforsomuchmoneyaday.Asthehorsesdidnotbelongtothesementheonlythingtheythoughtofwashowtogettheirmoneyoutofthem,first,topaythemaster,andthentoprovidefortheirownliving;andadreadfultimesomeofthesehorseshadofit.Ofcourse,Iunderstoodbutlittle,butitwasoftentalkedoveronthestand,andthegovernor,whowasakind-heartedmanandfondofhorses,wouldsometimesspeakupifonecameinverymuchjadedorill-used.
Onedayashabby,miserable-lookingdriver,whowentbythenameof“SeedySam”,broughtinhishorselookingdreadfullybeat,andthegovernorsaid:
“Youandyourhorselookmorefitforthepolicestationthanforthisrank.”
Themanflunghistatteredrugoverthehorse,turnedfullroundupontheGovernorandsaidinavoicethatsoundedalmostdesperate:
“Ifthepolicehaveanybusinesswiththematteritoughttobewiththemasterswhochargeussomuch,orwiththefaresthatarefixedsolow.Ifamanhastopayeighteenshillingsadayfortheuseofacabandtwohorses,asmanyofushavetodointheseason,andmustmakethatupbeforeweearnapennyforourselvesIsay’tismorethanhardwork;nineshillingsadaytogetoutofeachhorsebeforeyoubegintogetyourownliving.
