01 My Early Home
ThefirstplacethatIcanwellrememberwasalargepleasantmeadowwithapondofclearwaterinit.Someshadytreesleanedoverit,andrushesandwater-liliesgrewatthedeepend.Overthehedgeononesidewelookedintoaplowedfield,andontheotherwelookedoveragateatourmaster’shouse,whichstoodbytheroadside;atthetopofthemeadowwasagroveoffirtrees,andatthebottomarunningbrookoverhungbyasteepbank.
WhileIwasyoungIliveduponmymother’smilk,asIcouldnoteatgrass.InthedaytimeIranbyherside,andatnightIlaydownclosebyher.Whenitwashotweusedtostandbythepondintheshadeofthetrees,andwhenitwascoldwehadanicewarmshednearthegrove.
AssoonasIwasoldenoughtoeatgrassmymotherusedtogoouttoworkinthedaytime,andcomebackintheevening.
Thereweresixyoungcoltsinthemeadowbesidesme;theywereolderthanIwas;somewerenearlyaslargeasgrown-uphorses.Iusedtorunwiththem,andhadgreatfun;weusedtogallopalltogetherroundandroundthefieldashardaswecouldgo.Sometimeswehadratherroughplay,fortheywouldfrequentlybiteandkickaswellasgallop.
Oneday,whentherewasagooddealofkicking,mymotherwhinniedtometocometoher,andthenshesaid:
“IwishyoutopayattentiontowhatIamgoingtosaytoyou.Thecoltswholivehereareverygoodcolts,buttheyarecart-horsecolts,andofcoursetheyhavenotlearnedmanners.
