           TheywalkednorthonWabashtoAdamsStreetandthenwest.Thelightsinthestoreswerealreadyshiningoutingushesofgoldenhue.Thearclightsweresputteringoverhead,andhighupwerethelightedwindowsofthetallofficebuildings.Thechillwindwhippedinandoutingustybreaths.Homewardbound,thesixo’clockthrongbumpedandjostled.Lightovercoatswereturnedupabouttheears,hatswerepulleddown.Littleshop-girlswentflutteringbyinpairsandfours,chattering,laughing.Itwasaspectacleofwarm-bloodedhumanity.

           SuddenlyapairofeyesmetCarrie’sinrecognition.Theywerelookingoutfromagroupofpoorlydressedgirls.Theirclotheswerefadedandloose-hanging,theirjacketsold,theirgeneralmake-upshabby.

           Carrierecognisedtheglanceandthegirl.Shewasoneofthosewhoworkedatthemachinesintheshoefactory.Thelatterlooked,notquitesure,andthenturnedherheadandlooked.Carriefeltasifsomegreattidehadrolledbetweenthem.Theolddressandtheoldmachinecameback.Sheactuallystarted.
