           Theex-managerlaidhandtotheleverandpusheditgently,ashethought.Itworkedmucheasierthanheimagined,however,withtheresultthatthecarjerkedquicklyforward,throwinghimbackagainstthedoor.Hestraightenedupsheepishly,whiletheinstructorstoppedthecarwiththebrake.

           Theyranthecartotheendandbothgotoff.Hurstwoodwentintothebarnandsoughtacarstep,pullingouthispaper-wrappedlunchfromhispocket.Therewasnowaterandthebreadwasdry,butheenjoyedit.Therewasnoceremonyaboutdining.Heswallowedandlookedabout,contemplatingthedull,homelylabourofthething.Itwasdisagreeable—miserablydisagreeable—inallitsphases.Notbecauseitwasbitter,butbecauseitwashard.Itwouldbehardtoanyone,hethought.

           Aftereating,hestoodaboutasbefore,waitinguntilhisturncame.

           Theintentionwastogivehimanafternoonofpractice,butthegreaterpartofthetimewasspentinwaitingabout.
