           “Thedevil!”hesaidadozentimesinanhour.

           Itwasaquarterafterfourwhenheleftthehouse.Carriewasintears.Therewouldbenodinnerthatnight.

           Helookedaroundthesquare,andseeingtheseverallargehotels,decidedtogotoonefordinner.Hewouldgethispapersandmakehimselfcomfortablethere.

           HeascendedintothefineparlouroftheMortonHouse,thenoneofthebestNewYorkhotels,and,findingacushionedseat,read.Itdidnottroublehimmuchthathisdecreasingsumofmoneydidnotallowofsuchextravagance.
