           OnedayCarrie’sbellrangandtheservant,whowasinthekitchen,pressedthebuttonwhichcausedthefrontdoorofthegeneralentranceonthegroundfloortobeelectricallyunlatched.WhenCarriewaitedatherowndooronthethirdfloortoseewhoitmightbecominguptocallonher,Mrs.Vanceappeared.
