           “Doyouneedanyhelp?”saidCarrie,alreadylearningdirectnessofaddress.

           “Doyouknowhowtostitchcaps?”hereturned.

           “No,sir,”shereplied.

           “Haveyoueverhadanyexperienceatthiskindofwork?”heinquired.

           Sheansweredthatshehadnot.

           “Well,”saidtheforeman,scratchinghisearmeditatively,“wedoneedastitcher.Welikeexperiencedhelp,though.We’vehardlygottimetobreakpeoplein.”Hepausedandlookedawayoutofthewindow.“Wemight,though,putyouatfinishing,”heconcludedreflectively.

           “Howmuchdoyoupayaweek?”venturedCarrie,emboldenedbyacertainsoftnessintheman’smannerandhissimplicityofaddress.

           “Threeandahalf,”heanswered.

           “Oh,”shewasabouttoexclaim,butcheckedherselfandallowedherthoughtstodiewithoutexpression.

           “We’renotexactlyinneedofanybody,”hewentonvaguely,lookingheroverasonewouldapackage.“YoucancomeonMondaymorning,though,”headded,“andI’llputyoutowork.”

           “Thankyou,”saidCarrieweakly.

           “Ifyoucome,bringanapron,”headded.

           Hewalkedawayandleftherstandingbytheelevator,neversomuchasinquiringhername.

           WhiletheappearanceoftheshopandtheannouncementofthepricepaidperweekoperatedverymuchasablowtoCarrie’sfancy,thefactthatworkofanykindwasofferedaftersorudearoundofexperiencewasgratifying.Shecouldnotbegintobelievethatshewouldtaketheplace,modestasheraspirationswere.Shehadbeenusedtobetterthanthat.
