           Therewas,however,atthistime,onetheatre,theChicagoOperaHouse,whichwasconsiderablyinthepubliceye,anditsmanager,DavidA.Henderson,hadafairlocalreputation.Carriehadseenoneortwoelaborateperformancesthereandhadheardofseveralothers.SheknewnothingofHendersonnorofthemethodsofapplying,butsheinstinctivelyfeltthatthiswouldbealikelyplace,andaccordinglystrolledaboutinthatneighbourhood.Shecamebravelyenoughtotheshowyentranceway,withthepolishedandbegildedlobby,setwithframedpicturesoutofthecurrentattraction,leadinguptothequietbox-office,butshecouldgetnofurther.Anotedcomicoperacomedianwasholdingforththatweek,andtheairofdistinctionandprosperityoverawedher.Shecouldnotimaginethattherewouldbeanythinginsuchaloftysphereforher.Shealmosttrembledattheaudacitywhichmighthavecarriedherontoaterriblerebuff.Shecouldfindheartonlytolookatthepictureswhichwereshowyandthenwalkout.Itseemedtoherasifshehadmadeasplendidescapeandthatitwouldbefoolhardytothinkofapplyinginthatquarteragain.

           Thislittleexperiencesettledherhuntingforoneday.Shelookedaroundelsewhere,butitwasfromtheoutside.Shegotthelocationofseveralplayhousesfixedinhermind—notablytheGrandOperaHouseandMcVickar’s,bothofwhichwereleadinginattractions—andthencameaway.Herspiritsweremateriallyreduced,owingtothenewlyrestoredsenseofmagnitudeofthegreatinterestsandtheinsignificanceofherclaimsuponsociety,suchassheunderstoodthemtobe.
