ThemorrowwasSaturday,ahalf-holidayinmanybusinessquarters,andbesidesitwasabalmy,radiantday,withthetreesandgrassshiningexceedinglygreenaftertherainofthenightbefore.Whenshewentoutthesparrowsweretwitteringmerrilyinjoyouschoruses.Shecouldnothelpfeeling,asshelookedacrossthelovelypark,thatlifewasajoyousthingforthosewhodidnotneedtoworry,andshewishedoverandoverthatsomethingmightinterferenowtopreserveforherthecomfortablestatewhichshehadoccupied.ShedidnotwantDrouetorhismoneywhenshethoughtofit,noranythingmoretodowithHurstwood,butonlythecontentandeaseofmindshehadexperienced,for,afterall,shehadbeenhappy—happier,atleast,thanshewasnowwhenconfrontedbythenecessityofmakingherwayalone.
