           Shewasgazingnowsadlyoutupontheopensea,herarmrestinglistlesslyuponthepolisheddoor-post.

           Hurstwoodbegantofeeladeepsympathyforherandforhimself.Hecouldalmostfeelthatshewastalkingtohim.Hewas,byacombinationoffeelingsandentanglements,almostdeludedbythatqualityofvoiceandmannerwhich,likeapatheticstrainofmusic,seemseverapersonalandintimatething.Pathoshasthisquality,thatitseemseveraddressedtoonealone.

           “Andyet,shecanbeveryhappywithhim,”wentonthelittleactress.“Hersunnytemper,herjoyousfacewillbrightenanyhome.”

           Sheturnedslowlytowardtheaudiencewithoutseeing.Therewassomuchsimplicityinhermovementsthatsheseemedwhollyalone.Thenshefoundaseatbyatable,andturnedoversomebooks,devotingathoughttothem.
