           Hurstwoodhadcomeoutofhisownhomethatmorningfeelingmuchofthesameoldannoyance.Athisstorehehadidled,therebeingnoneedtowrite.Hehadcomeawaytothisplacewiththelightnessofheartwhichcharacterisesthosewhoputwearinessbehind.Now,intheshadeofthiscool,greenbush,helookedabouthimwiththefancyofthelover.Heheardthecartsgolumberingbyupontheneighbouringstreets,buttheywerefaroff,andonlybuzzeduponhisear.Thehumofthesurroundingcitywasfaint,theclangofanoccasionalbellwasasmusic.Helookedanddreamedanewdreamofpleasurewhichconcernedhispresentfixedconditionnotatall.HegotbackinfancytotheoldHurstwood,whowasneithermarriednorfixedinasolidpositionforlife.
