           ThispleasedHurstwoodimmensely.HegaveDrouetnocreditforanyfeelingstowardCarriewhatever.Heenviedhim,andnow,ashelookedatthewell-dressedjollysalesman,whomhesomuchliked,thegleamoftherivalglowedinhiseye.Hebeganto“sizeup”Drouetfromthestandpointsofwitandfascination.Hebegantolooktoseewherehewasweak.Therewasnodisputingthat,whateverhemightthinkofhimasagoodfellow,hefeltacertainamountofcontemptforhimasalover.Hecouldhoodwinkhimallright.Why,ifhewouldjustletCarrieseeonesuchlittleincidentasthatofThursday,itwouldsettlethematter.Heranoninthought,almostexulting,thewhilehelaughedandchatted,andDrouetfeltnothing.HehadnopowerofanalysingtheglanceandtheatmosphereofamanlikeHurstwood.Hestoodandsmiledandacceptedtheinvitationwhilehisfriendexaminedhimwiththeeyeofahawk.

           Theobjectofthispeculiarlyinvolvedcomedywasnotthinkingofeither.Shewasbusyadjustingherthoughtsandfeelingstonewerconditions,andwasnotindangerofsufferingdisturbingpangsfromeitherquarter.OneeveningDrouetfoundherdressingherselfbeforetheglass.

           “Cad,”saidhe,catchingher,“Ibelieveyou’regettingvain.”

           “Nothingofthekind,”shereturned,smiling.

           “Well,you’remightypretty,”hewenton,slippinghisarmaroundher.“Putonthatnavy-bluedressofyoursandI’lltakeyoutotheshow.”

           “Oh,I’vepromisedMrs.HaletogowithhertotheExpositionto-night,”shereturned,apologetically.
