           Drouetwasjustfinishingalittleincidenthewasrelating,andhisfacewasexpandingintoasmile,whenHurstwood’seyecaughthisown.Thelatterhadcomeinwithseveralfriends,and,seeingDrouetandsomewoman,notCarrie,drewhisownconclusion.

           “Ah,therascal,”hethought,andthen,withatouchofrighteoussympathy,“that’sprettyhardonthelittlegirl.”

           DrouetjumpedfromoneeasythoughttoanotherashecaughtHurstwood’seye.Hefeltbutverylittlemisgiving,untilhesawthatHurstwoodwascautiouslypretendingnottosee.Thensomeofthelatter’simpressionforceditselfuponhim.HethoughtofCarrieandtheirlastmeeting.ByGeorge,hewouldhavetoexplainthistoHurstwood.
