           Generallytheymeanonlythattheywilldoastheychoose,intheconfidencethatnoonewillknowtheirvagaries;andattheutmostonlythattheyarewillingtoactcontrarytotheopinionofthemajoritybecausetheyaresupportedbytheapprovaloftheirneighbours.Itisnotdifficulttobeunconventionalintheeyesoftheworldwhenyourunconventionalityisbuttheconventionofyourset.Itaffordsyouthenaninordinateamountofself-esteem.Youhavetheself-satisfactionofcouragewithouttheinconvenienceofdanger.Butthedesireforapprobationisperhapsthemostdeeplyseatedinstinctofcivilisedman.Noonerunssohurriedlytothecoverofrespectabilityastheunconventionalwomanwhohasexposedherselftotheslingsandarrowsofoutragedpropriety.Idonotbelievethepeoplewhotellmetheydonotcarearowofpinsfortheopinionoftheirfellows.Itisthebravadoofignorance.Theymeanonlythattheydonotfearreproachesforpeccadilloswhichtheyareconvincednonewilldiscover.

           Butherewasamanwhosincerelydidnotmindwhatpeoplethoughtofhim,andsoconventionhadnoholdonhim;hewaslikeawrestlerwhosebodyisoiled;youcouldnotgetagriponhim;itgavehimafreedomwhichwasanoutrage.Iremembersayingtohim:

           "Lookhere,ifeveryoneactedlikeyou,theworldcouldn’tgoon."

           "That’sadamnedsillythingtosay.Everyonedoesn’twanttoactlikeme.Thegreatmajorityareperfectlycontenttodotheordinarything."
