IwishIcouldsaythatIrecognisedatoncetheirbeautyandtheirgreatoriginality.NowthatIhaveseenmanyofthemagainandtherestarefamiliartomeinreproductions,IamastonishedthatatfirstsightIwasbitterlydisappointed.Ifeltnothingofthepeculiarthrillwhichitisthepropertyofarttogive.TheimpressionthatStrickland’spicturesgavemewasdisconcerting;andthefactremains,alwaystoreproachme,thatInevereventhoughtofbuyingany.Imissedawonderfulchance.Mostofthemhavefoundtheirwayintomuseums,andtherestarethetreasuredpossessionsofwealthyamateurs.Itrytofindexcusesformyself.Ithinkthatmytasteisgood,butIamconsciousthatithasnooriginality.Iknowverylittleaboutpainting,andIwanderalongtrailsthatothershaveblazedforme.AtthattimeIhadthegreatestadmirationfortheimpressionists.IlongedtopossessaSisleyandaDegas,andIworshippedManet.HisOlympiaseemedtomethegreatestpictureofmoderntimes,andLeDejeunersurl’Herbemovedmeprofoundly.Theseworksseemedtomethelastwordinpainting.
