           "Doesheevertalktoyouinthenight?"Iaskedheronce.

           "Never."

           "Doyoudislikehimasmuchasyoudid?"

           "More,ifanything."

           Shelookedatmewithhercalmgrayeyes.Herexpressionwassoplacid,itwashardtobelievethatshewascapableoftheviolentemotionIhadwitnessed.

           "Hasheeverthankedyouforwhatyoudoforhim?"

           "No,"shesmiled.

           "He’sinhuman."

           "He’sabominable."

           Stroevewas,ofcourse,delightedwithher.Hecouldnotdoenoughtoshowhisgratitudeforthewhole-hearteddevotionwithwhichshehadacceptedtheburdenhelaidonher.ButhewasalittlepuzzledbythebehaviourofBlancheandStricklandtowardsoneanother.

           "Doyouknow,I’veseenthemsitthereforhourstogetherwithoutsayingaword?"

           Ononeoccasion,whenStricklandwassomuchbetterthatinadayortwohewastogetup,Isatwiththeminthestudio.DirkandIweretalking.Mrs.Stroevesewed,andIthoughtIrecognisedtheshirtshewasmendingasStrickland’s.Helayonhisback;hedidnotspeak.OnceIsawthathiseyeswerefixedonBlancheStroeve,andtherewasinthemacuriousirony.Feelingtheirgaze,sheraisedherown,andforamomenttheystaredatoneanother.Icouldnotquiteunderstandherexpression.Hereyeshadinthemastrangeperplexity,andperhaps—butwhy?—alarm.InamomentStricklandlookedawayandidlysurveyedtheceiling,butshecontinuedtostareathim,andnowherlookwasquiteinexplicable.

           InafewdaysStricklandbegantogetup.Hewasnothingbutskinandbone.Hisclotheshunguponhimlikeragsonascarecrow.
