           Iknocked.Therewasnoanswer.Itriedthehandle,andfoundthedoorunlocked.Iwalkedin,andStroevefollowedme.Theroomwasindarkness.Icouldonlyseethatitwasanattic,withaslopingroof;andafaintglimmer,nomorethanalessprofoundobscurity,camefromaskylight.

           "Strickland,"Icalled.

           Therewasnoanswer.Itwasreallyrathermysterious,anditseemedtomethatStroeve,standingjustbehind,wastremblinginhisshoes.ForamomentIhesitatedtostrikealight.
