           Therewasastiletopassfromthisfieldintothenext.Ithadfoursteps,andastonetocrossoverwhenyoucametotheuppermost.Itwasimpossibleformetoclimbthisstile,becauseeverystepwassix-feethigh,andtheupperstoneabouttwenty.Iwasendeavouringtofindsomegapinthehedge,whenIdiscoveredoneoftheinhabitantsinthenextfield,advancingtowardsthestile,ofthesamesizewithhimwhomIsawintheseapursuingourboat.Heappearedastallasanordinaryspiresteeple,andtookabouttenyardsateverystride,asnearasIcouldguess.Iwasstruckwiththeutmostfearandastonishment,andrantohidemyselfinthecorn,whenceIsawhimatthetopofthestilelookingbackintothenextfieldontherighthand,andheardhimcallinavoicemanydegreeslouderthanaspeaking-trumpet:butthenoisewassohighintheair,thatatfirstIcertainlythoughtitwasthunder.Whereuponsevenmonsters,likehimself,cametowardshimwithreaping-hooksintheirhands,eachhookaboutthelargenessofsixscythes.Thesepeoplewerenotsowellcladasthefirst,whoseservantsorlabourerstheyseemedtobe;for,uponsomewordshespoke,theywenttoreapthecorninthefieldwhereIlay.IkeptfromthematasgreatadistanceasIcould,butwasforcedtomovewithextremedifficulty,forthestalksofthecornweresometimesnotaboveafootdistant,sothatIcouldhardlysqueezemybodybetwixtthem.However,Imadeashifttogoforward,tillIcametoapartofthefieldwherethecornhadbeenlaidbytherainandwind.Hereitwasimpossibleformetoadvanceastep;forthestalksweresointerwoven,thatIcouldnotcreepthrough,andthebeardsofthefallenearssostrongandpointed,thattheypiercedthroughmyclothesintomyflesh.AtthesametimeIheardthereapersnotahundredyardsbehindme.Beingquitedispiritedwithtoil,andwhollyovercomebygriefanddispair,Ilaydownbetweentworidges,andheartilywishedImightthereendmydays.
