Sometimestheywouldfixuponmynose,orforehead,wheretheystungmetothequick,smellingveryoffensively;andIcouldeasilytracethatviscousmatter,which,ournaturaliststellus,enablesthosecreaturestowalkwiththeirfeetupwardsuponaceiling.Ihadmuchadotodefendmyselfagainstthesedetestableanimals,andcouldnotforbearstartingwhentheycameonmyface.Itwasthecommonpracticeofthedwarf,tocatchanumberoftheseinsectsinhishand,asschoolboysdoamongus,andletthemoutsuddenlyundermynose,onpurposetofrightenme,anddivertthequeen.Myremedywastocuttheminpieceswithmyknife,astheyflewintheair,whereinmydexteritywasmuchadmired.
Iremember,onemorning,whenGlumdalclitchhadsetmeinaboxuponawindow,assheusuallydidinfairdaystogivemeair(forIdurstnotventuretolettheboxbehungonanailoutofthewindow,aswedowithcagesinEngland),afterIhadlifteduponeofmysashes,andsatdownatmytabletoeatapieceofsweetcakeformybreakfast,abovetwentywasps,alluredbythesmell,cameflyingintotheroom,humminglouderthanthedronesofasmanybagpipes.Someofthemseizedmycake,andcarrieditpiecemealaway;othersflewaboutmyheadandface,confoundingmewiththenoise,andputtingmeintheutmostterroroftheirstings.However,Ihadthecouragetoriseanddrawmyhanger,andattackthemintheair.Idispatchedfourofthem,buttherestgotaway,andIpresentlyshutmywindow.Theseinsectswereaslargeaspartridges:Itookouttheirstings,foundthemaninchandahalflong,andassharpasneedles.Icarefullypreservedthemall;andhavingsinceshownthem,withsomeothercuriosities,inseveralpartsofEurope,uponmyreturntoEnglandIgavethreeofthemtoGreshamCollege,andkeptthefourthformyself.
