Nothingbutanextremeloveoftruthcouldhavehinderedmefromconcealingthispartofmystory.Itwasinvaintodiscovermyresentments,whichwerealwaysturnedintoridicule;andIwasforcedtorestwithpatience,whilemynobleandbelovedcountrywassoinjuriouslytreated.Iamasheartilysorryasanyofmyreaderscanpossiblybe,thatsuchanoccasionwasgiven:butthisprincehappenedtobesocuriousandinquisitiveuponeveryparticular,thatitcouldnotconsisteitherwithgratitudeorgoodmanners,torefusegivinghimwhatsatisfactionIwasable.YetthusmuchImaybeallowedtosayinmyownvindication,thatIartfullyeludedmanyofhisquestions,andgavetoeverypointamorefavourableturn,bymanydegrees,thanthestrictnessoftruthwouldallow.ForIhavealwaysbornethatlaudablepartialitytomyowncountry,whichDionysiusHalicarnassensis,withsomuchjustice,recommendstoanhistorian:Iwouldhidethefrailtiesanddeformitiesofmypoliticalmother,andplacehervirtuesandbeautiesinthemostadvantageouslight.ThiswasmysincereendeavourinthosemanydiscoursesIhadwiththatmonarch,althoughitunfortunatelyfailedofsuccess.
Butgreatallowancesshouldbegiventoaking,wholiveswhollysecludedfromtherestoftheworld,andmustthereforebealtogetherunacquaintedwiththemannersandcustomsthatmostprevailinothernations:thewantofwhichknowledgewilleverproducemanyprejudices,andacertainnarrownessofthinking,fromwhichwe,andthepolitercountriesofEurope,arewhollyexempted.Anditwouldbehardindeed,ifsoremoteaprince’snotionsofvirtueandviceweretobeofferedasastandardforallmankind.
