Mymasterheardmewithgreatappearancesofuneasinessinhiscountenance;becausedoubting,ornotbelieving,aresolittleknowninthiscountry,thattheinhabitantscannottellhowtobehavethemselvesundersuchcircumstances.AndIremember,infrequentdiscourseswithmymasterconcerningthenatureofmanhoodinotherpartsoftheworld,havingoccasiontotalkoflyingandfalserepresentation,itwaswithmuchdifficultythathecomprehendedwhatImeant,althoughhehadotherwiseamostacutejudgment.Forhearguedthus:"thattheuseofspeechwastomakeusunderstandoneanother,andtoreceiveinformationoffacts;now,ifanyonesaidthethingwhichwasnot,theseendsweredefeated,becauseIcannotproperlybesaidtounderstandhim;andIamsofarfromreceivinginformation,thatheleavesmeworsethaninignorance;forIamledtobelieveathingblack,whenitiswhite,andshort,whenitislong."Andthesewereallthenotionshehadconcerningthatfacultyoflying,soperfectlywellunderstood,andsouniversallypractised,amonghumancreatures.
