AsIoughttohaveunderstoodhumannaturemuchbetterthanIsupposeditpossibleformymastertodo,soitwaseasytoapplythecharacterhegaveoftheYahoostomyselfandmycountrymen;andIbelievedIcouldyetmakefurtherdiscoveries,frommyownobservation.IthereforeoftenbeggedhishonourtoletmegoamongtheherdsofYahoosintheneighbourhood;towhichhealwaysverygraciouslyconsented,beingperfectlyconvincedthatthehatredIborethesebruteswouldneversuffermetobecorruptedbythem;andhishonourorderedoneofhisservants,astrongsorrelnag,veryhonestandgood-natured,tobemyguard;withoutwhoseprotectionIdurstnotundertakesuchadventures.ForIhavealreadytoldthereaderhowmuchIwaspesteredbytheseodiousanimals,uponmyfirstarrival;andIafterwardsfailedverynarrowly,threeorfourtimes,offallingintotheirclutches,whenIhappenedtostrayatanydistancewithoutmyhanger.AndIhavereasontobelievetheyhadsomeimaginationthatIwasoftheirownspecies,whichIoftenassistedmyselfbystrippingupmysleeves,andshowingmynakedarmsandbreastsintheirsight,whenmyprotectorwaswithme.Atwhichtimestheywouldapproachasnearastheydurst,andimitatemyactionsafterthemannerofmonkeys,buteverwithgreatsignsofhatred;asatamejackdawwithcapandstockingsisalwayspersecutedbythewildones,whenhehappenstobegotamongthem.
