Chapter 1

           Wecastanchorwithinaleagueofthiscreek,andourcaptainsentadozenofhismenwellarmedinthelong-boat,withvesselsforwater,ifanycouldbefound.Idesiredhisleavetogowiththem,thatImightseethecountry,andmakewhatdiscoveriesIcould.Whenwecametolandwesawnoriverorspring,noranysignofinhabitants.Ourmenthereforewanderedontheshoretofindoutsomefreshwaternearthesea,andIwalkedaloneaboutamileontheotherside,whereIobservedthecountryallbarrenandrocky.Inowbegantobeweary,andseeingnothingtoentertainmycuriosity,Ireturnedgentlydowntowardsthecreek;andtheseabeingfullinmyview,Isawourmenalreadygotintotheboat,androwingforlifetotheship.Iwasgoingtohollaafterthem,althoughithadbeentolittlepurpose,whenIobservedahugecreaturewalkingaftertheminthesea,asfastashecould:hewadednotmuchdeeperthanhisknees,andtookprodigiousstrides:butourmenhadthestartofhimhalfaleague,and,theseathereaboutsbeingfullofsharp-pointedrocks,themonsterwasnotabletoovertaketheboat.ThisIwasafterwardstold,forIdurstnotstaytoseetheissueoftheadventure;butranasfastasIcouldthewayIfirstwent,andthenclimbedupasteephill,whichgavemesomeprospectofthecountry.Ifounditfullycultivated;butthatwhichfirstsurprisedmewasthelengthofthegrass,which,inthosegroundsthatseemedtobekeptforhay,wasabouttwentyfeethigh.

           Ifellintoahighroad,forsoItookittobe,thoughitservedtotheinhabitantsonlyasafoot-paththroughafieldofbarley.HereIwalkedonforsometime,butcouldseelittleoneitherside,itbeingnownearharvest,andthecornrisingatleastfortyfeet.Iwasanhourwalkingtotheendofthisfield,whichwasfencedinwithahedgeofatleastonehundredandtwentyfeethigh,andthetreessoloftythatIcouldmakenocomputationoftheiraltitude.
