           StanleythentookmeasurestoexplorethecourseoftheLoualabaandtodescenditasfarasitsmouth.Onehundredandfortybearers,engagedatN’yangwe,andnineteenboats,formedthematerialandtheforceofhisexpedition.

           FromtheverystarthehadtofightthecannibalsofOugouson.Fromthestart,also,hehadtoattendtothecarryingofboats,soastopassinsuperablecataracts.

           Undertheequator,atthepointwheretheLoualabamakesabendtothenortheast,fifty-fourboats,mannedbyseveralhundrednatives,attackedStanley’slittlefleet,whichsucceededinputtingthemtoflight.ThenthecourageousAmerican,reascendingasfarastheseconddegreeofnorthernlatitude,ascertainedthattheLoualabawastheupperZaire,orCongo,andthatbyfollowingitscoursehecoulddescenddirectlytothesea.

           Thishedid,fightingnearlyeverydayagainstthetribesthatlivedneartheriver.
