Tempest

           

           Duringtheweekwhichfollowedthatevent,fromthe14thofFebruarytothe21st,noincidenttookplaceonboard.Thewindfromthenorthwestfreshenedgradually,andthe"Pilgrim"sailedrapidly,makingonanaverageonehundredandsixtymilesintwenty-fourhours.Itwasnearlyallthatcouldbeaskedofavesselofthatsize.

           DickSandthoughttheschoonermustbeapproachingthosepartsmorefrequentedbythemerchantvesselswhichseektopassfromonehemispheretotheother.Thenovicewasalwayshopingtoencounteroneofthoseships,andheclearlyintendedeithertotransferhispassengers,ortoborrowsomeadditionalsailors,andperhapsanofficer.But,thoughhewatchedvigilantly,noshipcouldbesignaled,andtheseawasalwaysdeserted.

           DickSandcontinuedtobesomewhatastonishedatthat.HehadcrossedthispartofthePacificseveraltimesduringhisthreefishingvoyagestotheSouthernSeas.Now,inthelatitudeandlongitudewherehisreckoningputhim,itwasseldomthatsomeEnglishorAmericanshipdidnotappear,ascendingfromCapeHorntowardtheequator,orcomingtowardtheextremepointofSouthAmerica.

           ButwhatDickSandwasignorantof,whathecouldnotevendiscover,wasthatthe"Pilgrim"wasalreadyinhigherlatitudethatistosay,moretothesouththanhesupposed.Thatwassofortworeasons:

           Thefirstwas,thatthecurrentsoftheseparts,whoseswiftnessthenovicecouldonlyimperfectlyestimate,hadcontributedwhilehecouldnotpossiblykeepaccountofthemtothrowtheshipoutofherroute.
