           Mrs.Weldonhadbeeninstalledonboardthe"Pilgrim"ascomfortablyaspossible.

           Neitherpoopnor"roufle"wasattheendofthedeck.Therewasnosterncabin,then,toreceivethepassengers.ShewasobligedtobecontentedwithCaptainHull’scabin,situatedaft,whichconstitutedhismodestsealodging.Andstillithadbeennecessaryforthecaptaintoinsist,inordertomakeheracceptit.There,inthatnarrowlodging,wasinstalledMrs.Weldon,withherchildandoldNan.Shetookhermealsthere,incompanywiththecaptainandCousinBenedict,forwhomtheyhadfittedupakindofcabinonboard.

           Astothecommanderofthe"Pilgrim,"hehadsettledhimselfinacabinbelongingtotheship’screw—acabinwhichwouldbeoccupiedbythesecondofficer,iftherewereasecondoneonboard.Butthebrig-schoonerwasnavigated,weknow,underconditionswhichenabledhertodispensewiththeservicesofasecondofficer.

           Themenofthe"Pilgrim,"goodandstrongseamen,wereverymuchunitedbycommonideasandhabits.Thisfishingseasonwasthefourthwhichtheyhadpassedtogether.AllAmericansoftheWest,theywereacquaintedforalongperiod,andbelongedtothesamecoastoftheStateofCalifornia.

           ThesebravemenshowedthemselvesverythoughtfultowardsMrs.Weldon,thewifeoftheowneroftheirship,forwhomtheyprofessedboundlessdevotion.
