           Theboatswain,setoverthiswork,wasaseamanofgreatcoolness,whoinspiredCaptainHullwitheveryconfidence.HehadnottofeareitherhesitationordistractionfromHowik.

           "Attentiontothesteering,Howik,"saidCaptainHull."Wearegoingtotrytosurprisethejubarte.Wewillonlyshowourselveswhenwearenearenoughtoharpoonit."

           "Thatisunderstood,sir,"repliedtheboatswain.

           Theoars,carefullymuffledwithstraw,workedsilently.Theboat,skilfullysteeredbytheboatswain,hadreachedthelargeshoalofcrustaceans.Thestarboardoarsstillsankinthegreenandlimpidwater,whilethosetolarboard,raisingthereddishliquid,seemedtoraindropsofblood.

           "Wineandwater!"saidoneofthesailors.

           "Yes,"repliedCaptainHull,"butwaterthatwecannotdrink,andwinethatwecannotswallow.
