4May —IfoundthatmylandlordhadgotaletterfromtheCount,directinghimtosecurethebestplaceonthecoachforme; butonmakinginquiriesastodetailsheseemedsomewhatreticent,andpretendedthathecouldnotunderstandmyGerman.
Thiscouldnotbetrue,becauseuptothenhehadunderstooditperfectly;atleast,heansweredmyquestionsexactlyasifhedid.
Heandhiswife,theoldladywhohadreceivedme,lookedateachotherinafrightenedsortofway. Hemumbledoutthatthemoneyhadbeensentinaletter,andthatwasallheknew. WhenIaskedhimifheknewCountDracula,andcouldtellmeanythingofhiscastle,bothheandhiswifecrossedthemselves,and,sayingthattheyknewnothingatall,simplyrefusedtospeakfurther. "ShewasinsuchanexcitedstatethatsheseemedtohavelosthergripofwhatGermansheknew,andmixeditallupwithsomeotherlanguagewhichIdidnotknowatall. Iwasjustabletofollowherbyaskingmanyquestions. WhenItoldherthatImustgoatonce,andthatIwasengagedonimportantbusiness,sheaskedagain:
