As,however,Igotnearthedoor,anewchangecameoverthepatient. HemovedtowardsmesoquicklythatforthemomentIfearedthathewasabouttomakeanotherhomicidalattack. Myfears,however,weregroundless,forhehelduphistwohandsimploringly,andmadehispetitioninamovingmanner. Ashesawthattheveryexcessofhisemotionwasmilitatingagainsthim,byrestoringusmoretoouroldrelations,hebecamestillmoredemonstrative. IglancedatVanHelsing,andsawmyconvictionreflectedinhiseyes,soIbecamealittlemorefixedinmymanner,ifnotmorestern,andmotionedtohimthathiseffortswereunavailing. Ihadpreviouslyseensomethingofthesameconstantlygrowingexcitementinhimwhenhehadtomakesomerequestofwhichatthetimehehadthoughtmuch,suchforinstance,aswhenhewantedacat,andIwaspreparedtoseethecollapseintothesamesullenacquiescenceonthisoccasion.
Myexpectationwasnotrealized,forwhenhefoundthathisappealwouldnotbesuccessful,hegotintoquiteafranticcondition. Hethrewhimselfonhisknees,andhelduphishands,wringingtheminplaintivesupplication,andpouredforthatorrentofentreaty,withthetearsrollingdownhischeeks,andhiswholefaceandformexpressiveofthedeepestemotion.
