ThiswasalltheinformationMr.Billingtoncouldgiveme,soIwentdowntotheportandsawthecoastguards,theCustomsOfficersandtheharbourmaster,whokindlyputmeincommunicationwiththemenwhohadactuallyreceivedtheboxes. Theirtallywasexactwiththelist,andtheyhadnothingtoaddtothesimpledescription‘fiftycasesofcommonearth’,exceptthattheboxeswere‘mainandmortalheavy’,andthatshiftingthemwasdrywork. Oneofthemaddedthatitwashardlinesthattherewasn’tanygentleman‘suchlikeaslikeyourself,squire’,toshowsomesortofappreciationoftheireffortsinaliquidform. Anotherputinariderthatthethirstthengeneratedwassuchthateventhetimewhichhadelapsedhadnotcompletelyallayedit. Needlesstoadd,Itookcarebeforeleavingtolift,foreverandadequately,thissourceofreproach.
30September. —ThestationmasterwasgoodenoughtogivemealinetohisoldcompanionthestationmasteratKing’sCross,sothatwhenIarrivedthereinthemorningIwasabletoaskhimaboutthearrivaloftheboxes. He,tooputmeatonceincommunicationwiththeproperofficials,andIsawthattheirtallywascorrectwiththeoriginalinvoice. Theopportunitiesofacquiringanabnormalthirsthadbeenherelimited. Anobleuseofthemhad,however,beenmade,andagainIwascompelledtodealwiththeresultinexpostfactomanner.
