           Strikingtheturnscrewthroughtheleadwithaswiftdownwardstab,whichmademewince,hemadeasmallhole,whichwas,however,bigenoughtoadmitthepointofthesaw. Ihadexpectedarushofgasfromtheweek-oldcorpse. Wedoctors,whohavehadtostudyourdangers,havetobecomeaccustomedtosuchthings,andIdrewbacktowardsthedoor. ButtheProfessorneverstoppedforamoment. Hesaweddownacoupleoffeetalongonesideoftheleadcoffin,andthenacross,anddowntheotherside. Takingtheedgeofthelooseflange,hebentitbacktowardsthefootofthecoffin,andholdingupthecandleintotheaperture,motionedtometolook. 

           Idrewnearandlooked. Thecoffinwasempty. Itwascertainlyasurprisetome,andgavemeaconsiderableshock,butVanHelsingwasunmoved. Hewasnowmoresurethaneverofhisground,andsoemboldenedtoproceedinhistask. "Areyousatisfiednow,friendJohn?"heasked. 

           IfeltallthedoggedargumentativenessofmynatureawakewithinmeasIansweredhim, "IamsatisfiedthatLucy’sbodyisnotinthatcoffin,butthatonlyprovesonething."

           TheProfessorsighed. "Ahwell!"hesaid,"wemusthavemoreproof.Comewithme."
