IwasnotabletolightonanymaporworkgivingtheexactlocalityoftheCastleDracula,astherearenomapsofthiscountryasyettocomparewithourownOrdanceSurveyMaps; butIfoundthatBistritz,theposttownnamedbyCountDracula,isafairlywell-knownplace. Ishallenterheresomeofmynotes,astheymayrefreshmymemorywhenItalkovermytravelswithMina.
InthepopulationofTransylvaniatherearefourdistinctnationalities: SaxonsintheSouth,andmixedwiththemtheWallachs,whoarethedescendantsoftheDacians;MagyarsintheWest,andSzekelysintheEastandNorth. Iamgoingamongthelatter,whoclaimtobedescendedfromAttilaandtheHuns. Thismaybeso,forwhentheMagyarsconqueredthecountryintheeleventhcenturytheyfoundtheHunssettledinit.
IreadthateveryknownsuperstitionintheworldisgatheredintothehorseshoeoftheCarpathians,asifitwerethecentreofsomesortofimaginativewhirlpool; ifsomystaymaybeveryinteresting. (Mem.,ImustasktheCountallaboutthem.)
Ididnotsleepwell,thoughmybedwascomfortableenough,forIhadallsortsofqueerdreams. Ihadforbreakfastmorepaprika,andasortofporridgeofmaizeflourwhichtheysaidwas"mamaliga",andegg-plantstuffedwithforcemeat,averyexcellentdish,whichtheycall"impletata". (Mem.,getrecipeforthisalso.)
