           WhenfirsttheProfessor’seyehadlituponhim,hehadbeenangryathisinterruptionatsuchatime,butnow,ashetookinhisstalwartproportionsandrecognizedthestrongyoungmanhoodwhichseemedtoemanatefromhim,hiseyesgleamed. Withoutapausehesaidtohimasheheldouthishand, 

           "Sir,youhavecomeintime. Youaretheloverofourdearmiss. Sheisbad,very,verybad. Nay,mychild,donotgolikethat." Forhesuddenlygrewpaleandsatdowninachairalmostfainting. "Youaretohelpher. Youcandomorethananythatlive,andyourcourageisyourbesthelp." 

           "WhatcanIdo?"askedArthurhoarsely. "Tellme,andIshalldoit. Mylifeishers,andIwouldgivethelastdropofbloodinmybodyforher." 

           TheProfessorhasastronglyhumorousside,andIcouldfromoldknowledgedetectatraceofitsorigininhisanswer. 

           "Myyoungsir,Idonotasksomuchasthat,notthelast!" 

           "WhatshallIdo?"Therewasfireinhiseyes,andhisopennostrilsquiveredwithintent. VanHelsingslappedhimontheshoulder. 

           "Come!"hesaid. "Youareaman,anditisamanwewant. Youarebetterthanme,betterthanmyfriendJohn." Arthurlookedbewildered,andtheProfessorwentonbyexplaininginakindlyway.
