By-and-by,however,asIwascurioustoknowhowtimewaspassing,Istruckamatch,andbyitsflamelookedatmywatch. Itwaswithinafewminutesofmidnight. Thisgavemeasortofshock,forIsupposethegeneralsuperstitionaboutmidnightwasincreasedbymyrecentexperiences. Iwaitedwithasickfeelingofsuspense.
Thenadogbegantohowlsomewhereinafarmhousefardowntheroad,along,agonizedwailing,asiffromfear. Thesoundwastakenupbyanotherdog,andthenanotherandanother,till,borneonthewindwhichnowsighedsoftlythroughthePass,awildhowlingbegan,whichseemedtocomefromalloverthecountry,asfarastheimaginationcouldgraspitthroughthegloomofthenight.
Atthefirsthowlthehorsesbegantostrainandrear,butthedriverspoketothemsoothingly,andtheyquieteddown,butshiveredandsweatedasthoughafterarunawayfromsuddenfright. Then,faroffinthedistance,fromthemountainsoneachsideofusbeganalouderandasharperhowling,thatofwolves,whichaffectedboththehorsesandmyselfinthesameway. ForIwasmindedtojumpfromthecalecheandrun,whilsttheyrearedagainandplungedmadly,sothatthedriverhadtouseallhisgreatstrengthtokeepthemfrombolting. Inafewminutes,however,myownearsgotaccustomedtothesound,andthehorsessofarbecamequietthatthedriverwasabletodescendandtostandbeforethem.
Hepettedandsoothedthem,andwhisperedsomethingintheirears,asIhaveheardofhorse-tamersdoing,andwithextraordinaryeffect,forunderhiscaressestheybecamequitemanageableagain,thoughtheystilltrembled. Thedriveragaintookhisseat,andshakinghisreins,startedoffatagreatpace. Thistime,aftergoingtothefarsideofthePass,hesuddenlyturneddownanarrowroadwaywhichransharplytotheright.
