Sheappearedtobelookingoveratourownseat,whereonwasadarkfigureseatedalone. Iwasquitealittlestartledmyself,foritseemedforaninstantasifthestrangerhadgreateyeslikeburningflames,butasecondlookdispelledtheillusion. TheredsunlightwasshiningonthewindowsofSt.Mary’sChurchbehindourseat,andasthesundippedtherewasjustsufficientchangeintherefractionandreflectiontomakeitappearasifthelightmoved. IcalledLucy’sattentiontothepeculiareffect,andshebecameherselfwithastart,butshelookedsadallthesame. Itmayhavebeenthatshewasthinkingofthatterriblenightupthere. Weneverrefertoit,soIsaidnothing,andwewenthometodinner. Lucyhadaheadacheandwentearlytobed. Isawherasleep,andwentoutforalittlestrollmyself.
Iwalkedalongthecliffstothewestward,andwasfullofsweetsadness,forIwasthinkingofJonathan. Whencominghome,itwasthenbrightmoonlight,sobrightthat,thoughthefrontofourpartoftheCrescentwasinshadow,everythingcouldbewellseen,Ithrewaglanceupatourwindow,andsawLucy’sheadleaningout. Iopenedmyhandkerchiefandwavedit. Shedidnotnoticeormakeanymovementwhatever. Justthen,themoonlightcreptroundanangleofthebuilding,andthelightfellonthewindow. TheredistinctlywasLucywithherheadlyingupagainstthesideofthewindowsillandhereyesshut. Shewasfastasleep,andbyher,seatedonthewindowsill,wassomethingthatlookedlikeagood-sizedbird. Iwasafraidshemightgetachill,soIranupstairs,butasIcameintotheroomshewasmovingbacktoherbed,fastasleep,andbreathingheavily. Shewasholdingherhandtoherthroat,asthoughtoprotectiffromthecold.
Ididnotwakeher,buttuckedherupwarmly. Ihavetakencarethatthedoorislockedandthewindowsecurelyfastened.
