AttheedgeoftheWestCliffabovethepierIlookedacrosstheharbourtotheEastCliff,inthehopeorfear,Idon’tknowwhich,ofseeingLucyinourfavouriteseat.
Therewasabrightfullmoon,withheavyblack,drivingclouds,whichthrewthewholesceneintoafleetingdioramaoflightandshadeastheysailedacross. ForamomentortwoIcouldseenothing,astheshadowofacloudobscuredSt.Mary’sChurchandallaroundit. ThenasthecloudpassedIcouldseetheruinsoftheabbeycomingintoview,andastheedgeofanarrowbandoflightassharpasasword-cutmovedalong,thechurchandchurchyardbecamegraduallyvisible. Whatevermyexpectationwas,itwasnotdisappointed,forthere,onourfavouriteseat,thesilverlightofthemoonstruckahalf-recliningfigure,snowywhite. Thecomingofthecloudwastooquickformetoseemuch,forshadowshutdownonlightalmostimmediately,butitseemedtomeasthoughsomethingdarkstoodbehindtheseatwherethewhitefigureshone,andbentoverit. Whatitwas,whethermanorbeast,Icouldnottell.
Ididnotwaittocatchanotherglance,butflewdownthesteepstepstothepierandalongbythefish-markettothebridge,whichwastheonlywaytoreachtheEastCliff. Thetownseemedasdead,fornotasouldidIsee. Irejoicedthatitwasso,forIwantednowitnessofpoorLucy’scondition. Thetimeanddistanceseemedendless,andmykneestrembledandmybreathcamelabouredasItoileduptheendlessstepstotheabbey. Imusthavegonefast,andyetitseemedtomeasifmyfeetwereweightedwithlead,andasthougheveryjointinmybodywererusty.
WhenIgotalmosttothetopIcouldseetheseatandthewhitefigure,forIwasnowcloseenoughtodistinguishiteventhroughthespellsofshadow. Therewasundoubtedlysomething,longandblack,bendingoverthehalf-recliningwhitefigure.
