ThereisanadditionalcauseinthatpoorMr.Swaleswasfounddeadthismorningonourseat,hisneckbeingbroken. Hehadevidently,asthedoctorsaid,fallenbackintheseatinsomesortoffright,fortherewasalookoffearandhorroronhisfacethatthemensaidmadethemshudder. Poordearoldman!
Lucyissosweetandsensitivethatshefeelsinfluencesmoreacutelythanotherpeopledo. JustnowshewasquiteupsetbyalittlethingwhichIdidnotmuchheed,thoughIammyselfveryfondofanimals.

Finallythemantoogotangry,andjumpeddownandkickedthedog,andthentookitbythescruffoftheneckandhalfdraggedandhalfthrewitonthetombstoneonwhichtheseatisfixed. Themomentittouchedthestonethepoorthingbegantotremble. Itdidnottrytogetaway,butcroucheddown,quiveringandcowering,andwasinsuchapitiablestateofterrorthatItried,thoughwithouteffect,tocomfortit.
