9August. —Thesequeltothestrangearrivalofthederelictinthestormlastnightisalmostmorestartlingthanthethingitself. ItturnsoutthattheschoonerisRussianfromVarna,andiscalledtheDemeter. Sheisalmostentirelyinballastofsilversand,withonlyasmallamountofcargo,anumberofgreatwoodenboxesfilledwithmould.
ThiscargowasconsignedtoaWhitbysolicitor,Mr.S.F.Billington,of7,TheCrescent,whothismorningwentaboardandtookformalpossessionofthegoodsconsignedtohim.
TheRussianconsul,too,actingforthecharter-party,tookformalpossessionoftheship,andpaidallharbourdues,etc.
Nothingistalkedaboutheretodayexceptthestrangecoincidence. TheofficialsoftheBoardofTradehavebeenmostexactinginseeingthateverycompliancehasbeenmadewithexistingregulations. Asthematteristobea‘ninedayswonder’,theyareevidentlydeterminedthatthereshallbenocauseofothercomplaint.
