IhadbeeninagonytoobtainsomeknowledgeofthecircumstancesinwhichmyDorawouldbeplaced—as,inwhoseguardianship,andsoforth—andthiswassomethingtowardsit.Webeganthesearchatonce;Mr.jorkinsunlockingthedrawersanddesks,andwealltakingoutthepapers.Theoffice-papersweplacedononeside,andtheprivatepapers(whichwerenotnumerous)ontheother.Wewereverygrave;andwhenwecametoastrayseal,orpencil-case,orring,oranylittlearticleofthatkindwhichweassociatedpersonallywithhim,wespokeverylow.
Wehadsealedupseveralpackets;andwerestillgoingondustilyandquietly,whenMr.jorkinssaidtous,applyingexactlythesamewordstohislatepartnerashislatepartnerhadappliedtohim:
‘Mr.Spenlowwasverydifficulttomovefromthebeatentrack.Youknowwhathewas!Iamdisposedtothinkhehadmadenowill.’
