Whatisnaturalinme,isnaturalinmanyothermen,Iinfer,andsoIamnotafraidtowritethatIneverhadlovedSteerforthbetterthanwhenthetiesthatboundmetohimwerebroken.Inthekeendistressofthediscoveryofhisunworthiness,Ithoughtmoreofallthatwasbrilliantinhim,Isoftenedmoretowardsallthatwasgoodinhim,Ididmorejusticetothequalitiesthatmighthavemadehimamanofanoblenatureandagreatname,thaneverIhaddoneintheheightofmydevotiontohim.DeeplyasIfeltmyownunconsciouspartinhispollutionofanhonesthome,IbelievedthatifIhadbeenbroughtfacetofacewithhim,Icouldnothaveutteredonereproach.Ishouldhavelovedhimsowellstill—thoughhefascinatedmenolonger—Ishouldhaveheldinsomuchtendernessthememoryofmyaffectionforhim,thatIthinkIshouldhavebeenasweakasaspirit-woundedchild,inallbuttheentertainmentofathoughtthatwecouldeverbere-united.ThatthoughtIneverhad.Ifelt,ashehadfelt,thatallwasatanendbetweenus.Whathisremembrancesofmewere,Ihaveneverknown—theywerelightenough,perhaps,andeasilydismissed—butmineofhimwereastheremembrancesofacherishedfriend,whowasdead.
